Coops and hutches house chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and ducks safely outdoors, year-round. Our range covers compact 2–4 bird chicken coops, walk-in coop-and-run combinations, rabbit hutches with attached runs, guinea pig hutches, and combined multi-pet enclosures. Over 140 coop and hutch options in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $120 compact rabbit hutches to $800 large walk-in chicken coops. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.
What size coop do I need for my chickens?
Australian backyard chicken guidance gives each hen 1 square metre of coop space plus 2 square metres of run space — so 4 chickens need a 4m² coop and 8m² run. Under-sized coops cause feather-pecking, stress and reduced egg-laying. A coop labelled "6 chickens" often only fits 4 comfortably; read the actual dimensions, not the chicken count claim. The run is more important than the coop because chickens spend their day there. If you free-range during the day, you can size down the run; the coop itself still needs to fit all the hens overnight with room to perch comfortably.
What types of coops and hutches are available?
| Type | Best for | Capacity | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact chicken coop | 2–4 chickens | Small backyard | $200–$400 |
| Walk-in coop and run | 4–8 chickens | Medium yard | $400–$800 |
| Compact rabbit hutch | 1–2 rabbits | Small yard or veranda | $120–$300 |
| Two-storey rabbit hutch | 2–3 rabbits | Standard backyard | $200–$500 |
| Guinea pig hutch | 2–4 guinea pigs | Yard or covered area | $150–$350 |
| Duck or quail enclosure | Specialist setups | Yard | $200–$600 |
What features matter most in a chicken coop?
Five features decide whether a coop is functional or a maintenance nightmare. Predator-proofing is first — the coop needs to be lockable, with no gaps over 2cm that foxes, snakes or rats can exploit. Ventilation is second; chickens produce a lot of humid air, and a poorly ventilated coop becomes a damp respiratory-disease box. Easy egg access (a side hatch over the nesting boxes) is third — makes daily collection a one-hand job rather than a coop-entering task. Pull-out cleaning trays are fourth; manual mucking-out is the chore that ends most backyard chicken experiments. Sloped perches at different heights are fifth — hens establish a pecking order and need separate roosts.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Coop space per chicken: 1m² minimum; double for closed-in setups
- Run space per chicken: 2m² minimum; bigger is better
- Predator-proof: No gaps over 2cm, lockable doors, buried wire mesh
- Ventilation: Vents near the roof, not at chicken level
- Cleaning access: Pull-out tray or large side door
- Weather protection: Roof slope for rain runoff, no flat surfaces that pool
Where should the coop go in the backyard?
The right position makes a real difference. Pick partial shade — morning sun for warmth, afternoon shade so the coop doesn't bake. Avoid the lowest part of the yard where water pools after rain; chickens and rabbits both develop foot problems on constantly damp ground. Keep the coop at least 3 metres from the house (council odour rules and your own preferences), but close enough that you'll actually walk out twice a day. Position the run on grass if possible — chickens scratch and eat insects, which benefits the lawn unless you have too many in too small a space.
How much do coops and hutches cost in Australia?
Coops and hutches at Simple Deals start from $120 for compact rabbit hutches. Most family-sized chicken coops sit between $200 and $500, with larger walk-in coop-and-run combinations running up to $800+. All units dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most pet stores won't admit
Almost every coop and hutch sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the coop is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: the capacity claim on most coops is optimistic by 30–50%. A coop marketed as "6 chickens" usually has space for 3–4 birds comfortably. The reason is straight from Chinese factory math — the calculation uses 0.5m² per bird (industrial chicken-house density), not the 1m² backyard standard. If a coop lists "6 chickens", plan for 4. Under-stocking by 30–50% gives healthier, longer-laying hens.
Frequently asked questions
What if my coop or hutch arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack coops, but check the timber panels for chips on receipt.
How long does assembly take?
Compact rabbit hutches: 30–60 minutes for one person. Standard chicken coops: 60–120 minutes for one or two people. Walk-in coops: 3–6 hours, often a two-person job. Tools and instructions are included.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $400 coop works out to four payments of $100 with Afterpay, four payments of $100 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $33 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled coops in original packaging.
Complete the backyard pet setup
A coop or hutch handles the housing, and a few pieces complete the small-pet setup. Most owners add three at the same time: a temporary playpen for supervised free-range time, pest control for rodents and mites, and farm supplies for feed and bedding.
