A winch is the piece of 4WD gear that sits unused for 100 trips and saves your bacon on the 101st. Our range covers electric 4WD winches from 9,500lb to 14,500lb, hand winches for boats and trailers, and dedicated boat winches. Winches from $149, with most quality 4WD electric winches between $399 and $1,399. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, dispatching within 1–2 business days.
What size winch do I need for my 4WD?
The rule is 1.5x your vehicle's GVM. A 3-tonne 4WD (Prado, Pajero, GU Patrol) needs at least a 12,000lb (5.4-tonne) winch. A 3.5-tonne GVM setup (LandCruiser, Ranger) wants 14,500lb or more. Undersizing means burnt-out motors on the first serious recovery. Oversizing costs more upfront but means quieter, cooler operation because you rarely run the winch at full load. If you plan on serious touring or bogging in mud, size up. If you are buying "just in case" for family camping trips, a 9,500lb winch on a small 4WD is enough.
What types of winches are available?
| Type | Best for | Pull rating | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand winch | Boats, trailers, light recovery | 0.9–2 tonne | $149–$349 |
| Electric 9,500lb | Small 4WD (2.5T), light bush | 4.3 tonne | $399–$899 |
| Electric 12,000lb | Standard 4WD (3T), typical recovery | 5.4 tonne | $599–$1,399 |
| Electric 14,500lb+ | Heavy vehicles, remote touring | 6.6+ tonne | $899–$2,499 |
| Boat winch | Trailer loading, hull retrieval | Varies | $199–$799 |
Are synthetic winch ropes better than steel cable?
For 4WD recovery, yes. Synthetic rope weighs one-eighth of steel cable for the same rating, does not store dangerous elastic energy when snapped (steel cable whips lethally), and is easier on the hands. Steel is cheaper, more resistant to rock abrasion, and does not UV-degrade. Most modern 4WD recovery is synthetic. If you drag winch cable through gravel and rocks regularly, steel lasts longer. If you use the winch a few times a year for standard recovery, synthetic is safer and lighter. Both work; the choice is about how you use the winch.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Pull rating: 1.5x vehicle GVM minimum
- Motor size: 4.5–6kW for serious recovery without heat cut-out
- Rope type: Synthetic for safety and weight; steel for abrasion
- IP rating: IP67 or IP68 for water crossings
- Solenoid: Sealed and waterproof — the weakest point on cheap winches
- Remote control: Both wired and wireless should be included
Can I use a 4WD winch as a boat winch?
Not usually. 4WD winches are set up for horizontal pulling under low duty cycle (short pulls with cooling breaks). Boat winches are geared for vertical hull lifting with lower speeds and higher-frequency use. Different mounts, different duty cycles, different remote setups. If you need both, buy both — the mount patterns and gear ratios do not translate.
How much do winches cost in Australia?
Winches at Simple Deals start from $149 for hand winches. Most electric 4WD winches sit between $399 and $1,399, with heavy-duty 14,500lb+ setups running higher. All items dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most sites won't admit
Almost every winch sold in Australia is manufactured in China, some to genuinely high standards and some to less — including ours across the range. The real difference is not where the winch is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions is that the line pull rating is measured at the first wrap of rope on the drum. As rope wraps deeper onto the drum with more cable stored, the effective mechanical advantage drops. A winch rated at 5.4 tonnes on the first wrap can pull as little as 3.5 tonnes when the rope is fully wound in on the fifth or sixth wrap. This is why the "1.5x vehicle GVM" rule matters. A 3-tonne 4WD stuck deep with most of the rope needing to spool in needs a winch that comfortably out-rates the vehicle by 50%.
Frequently asked questions
What if my winch arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with properly packed winches.
Do I need a bull bar to fit a winch?
Yes for most electric 4WD winches — the bull bar provides the mounting cradle and structural strength. Some vehicles have winch-compatible mounting plates behind the front bumper. Check compatibility with your specific vehicle before buying.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $899 12,000lb winch works out to four payments of $224.75 with Afterpay, four payments of $224.75 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $75 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 30-day change-of-mind returns on unused winches in original packaging.
Complete the recovery kit
A winch alone does not recover you. A few things go with it. Most 4WDers add three at the same time: LED light bars for after-dark recovery, an air compressor for tyre pressure work, and outdoor storage boxes for recovery gear on the ute tray.
