Sanders

Sanders are one of those tools everyone underestimates until they finish a project and realise the sander did half the work. Our range covers random orbital sanders for cabinetmaking, belt sanders for aggressive stock removal, detail sanders for corners, and cordless models for site work. Sanders from $99, with most quality orbital sanders between $149 and $399. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, dispatching within 1–2 business days.

What sander should I buy first?

A 125mm random orbital sander with variable speed and dust extraction. It's the do-most tool of the sander world — finish work, between-coat sanding, most furniture prep. Add a belt sander later if you do serious stock removal, or a detail sander if you do trim and moulding work. A single premium orbital does 80% of what most home users need. Skip cheap combo kits with multiple no-name sanders — one good tool beats three mediocre ones.

What types of sanders are available?

Type Best for Grit range Price guide
Random orbital 125mm Furniture finish, general woodwork 80–240 $99–$399
Belt sander Aggressive stock removal, floor prep 60–120 $149–$499
Detail sander (triangular) Corners, inside curves, mouldings 80–240 $99–$249
Sheet sander (1/4 or 1/3) Between coats, light finish 120–320 $79–$199
Cordless orbital Site work, on-tool jobs 80–240 $249–$599

Do sanders need dust extraction?

Yes, health-wise. Sanding dust is a respiratory hazard, especially from MDF, treated timber or old paint (lead risk). Every serious sander should be connected to a dust extractor or shop vac. Onboard dust bags catch some, but a proper extractor with HEPA filter catches most of it before it goes in your lungs. Cheap sanders without dust extraction ports are false economy — you pay in respiratory health.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Variable speed: Critical for finish work; fixed-speed burns through fine grits
  • Dust extraction port: Non-negotiable for MDF or treated timber
  • Orbit diameter: 5mm is standard; larger removes faster but leaves coarser finish
  • Pad flatness: Should sit dead flat; cheap pads have visible high spots
  • Weight: Lower weight means less fatigue on long sanding sessions
  • Disc size: 125mm hook-and-loop is the industry standard

How do you use a random orbital sander correctly?

Let the tool do the work. Pressing down harder does not sand faster — it just wears the disc and creates burn marks. Move the sander slowly across the surface in overlapping paths, keeping the pad flat. Change grits progressively (80 → 120 → 180 → 240 for a fine finish). Vacuum the surface between grits so you're not just rubbing coarse dust into the fresh wood. Never stop the sander on the surface — it leaves swirl marks that show through finish.

How much do sanders cost in Australia?

Sanders at Simple Deals start from $99 for entry-level orbital and sheet sanders. Most quality random orbital sanders sit between $149 and $399, with cordless and belt sanders from $249 to $599. All items dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.

What most sites won't admit

Almost every sander sold in Australia is manufactured in China, Malaysia or Germany — including ours. The real difference is not where the sander is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions is that OPM (orbits per minute) alone tells you nothing useful. Two sanders at 12,000 OPM with different orbit diameters (5mm vs 3mm) remove stock at completely different rates. Two sanders with the same OPM but different pad flatness leave completely different finishes. The specs that actually matter — orbit path, pad flatness and dust extraction airflow — are not in the box specs. A cheap "13,000 OPM" sander is often out-worked by a "10,000 OPM" premium one because the premium tool's pad is genuinely flat and its dust extraction actually works.

Frequently asked questions

What if my sander arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with boxed sanders.

What sanding discs work with my sander?
125mm hook-and-loop discs fit most random orbital sanders. Sheet sanders use 1/4 or 1/3 sheet paper. Belt sanders use specific belt sizes — check your tool's manual for the belt width.

How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.

Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $299 premium random orbital sander works out to four payments of $74.75 with Afterpay, four payments of $74.75 with PayPal Pay in 4, or a small monthly amount with Zip. Klarna is also available.

What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unopened sanders in original packaging.

Complete the finishing kit

A sander sits alongside the rest of the finish carpentry toolkit. A few things go with it. Most workshop owners add three at the same time: power tools for drilling and cutting before sanding, nail guns for fastening before finish sanding, and an air compressor for cleanup and pneumatic tools alongside.
