Do I really need a pet seat cover?

If your dog or cat travels in the car more than once a fortnight, yes. Pet claws scratch leather and cloth upholstery; wet dogs after the beach soak through to the foam padding; muddy paws leave permanent stains; and shed fur is impossible to fully vacuum out of weave-style fabric seats. The repair cost for damaged upholstery (or trade-in value loss) usually exceeds the $50–100 cost of a seat cover within a few months of regular pet travel. What types of pet seat covers are available?

Hammock or flat-bench cover — which is better?

Hammock covers (with raised sides that rise up the back of the front seats) are better for most pet travel. They contain the pet to the back area, stop them sliding into the footwell during braking, and protect the back of the front seats from muddy paws. The downside: they make it harder to seat human passengers in the back at the same time — you have to remove the cover. Flat-bench covers work better for households with kids or regular adult back-seat passengers, since they convert in seconds. For larger SUVs with a dedicated cargo area behind the back seats, a cargo cover is usually the right answer — dogs travel safer in the boot than the back seat in collisions.

What about pet safety while travelling?

For cats and small dogs, a secured carrier on the back seat or footwell is safer than letting them loose. What most pet stores won't admit

Almost every pet seat cover sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the cover is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. The other thing nobody mentions: the "waterproof" claim varies a lot between products. Truly waterproof covers have a polyurethane or vinyl backing that stops liquid passing through to the seat underneath. "Water-resistant" covers shed light splashes but soak through with a wet dog or longer exposure. If the listing only says water-resistant, expect the back-seat fabric underneath to get damp after a beach trip. Most back-seat hammock covers are designed for sedans, hatches and small SUVs (around 140–150cm wide bench). Larger SUVs and 4x4s need wider covers; measure the back bench before buying.

How long does delivery take?
