What size sand pit do I need?
For one or two kids under 5, a 90–120cm sand pit is enough. For multiple kids or older siblings, 150–180cm works better — gives room for separate digging zones and reduces the "she's in my pit" arguments. Allow at least 50cm of clear space around the pit so spilled sand stays manageable. Sand quantity: a 1m x 1m x 20cm deep pit holds about 200kg of sand. Sand-pit-grade washed sand is sold in 20kg bags at most hardware stores for around $5–8 per bag.

What sand should I use in a kids' sand pit?
Use washed play sand, not building sand or river sand. The differences matter: play sand is graded to a uniform fine grain, washed to remove clay and silt, and tested for cleanliness. Building sand contains clay binders that stain clothes and hands. River sand has sharp grains that scratch. Play sand also stays drier — building sand turns into wet clumps after the first rain. Most hardware stores stock washed play sand by the bag (20kg, $5–8) or by the cubic metre delivered for around $80–150.

How do I keep a sand pit clean?
The cover is the most important thing. An uncovered sand pit becomes a cat litter tray within a week, and the sand has to be fully replaced. A waterproof cover keeps both rain and animals out. Beyond the cover: rake the sand once a week to break up clumps and bring debris to the surface, and replace the sand every 12–18 months as it becomes contaminated with leaves, food crumbs and skin cells. The cover also lets you leave the sand pit out year-round in most climates; without it, the sand becomes unusable within a season.
How much do sand pits cost in Australia?
