A bookcase does more than hold books — it sets the storage and display in a living room, study or child's room, and the right one depends as much on the wall and the room as on the shelves themselves. We stock over 250 bookcases and shelving units — freestanding, ladder, corner, cube and wall-mounted styles, plus kids' designs — from around $50, with most sitting between $65 and $130. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, so orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.
What types of bookcases are there?
Bookcases come in a few main styles, and the room usually decides which fits. A freestanding bookcase is the standard upright unit with fixed or adjustable shelves, and suits most living rooms and studies. A ladder bookcase leans against the wall with shelves that step back as they rise, which gives a lighter, more open look in a small room. A corner bookcase is shaped to fill a room corner that would otherwise sit empty. A cube bookcase uses open square compartments and works well with storage boxes or as a room divider. A wall-mounted shelf frees the floor entirely. Match the style to the wall space you have rather than buying the largest unit that fits.
What size bookcase do I need?
Bookcases generally range from about 80cm to 180cm tall. A low bookcase under 100cm can sit beneath a window or double as a surface for lamps and plants. A mid-height unit suits most living rooms. A tall bookcase over 120cm holds the most but must be anchored to the wall — see below. Measure the wall width and height before ordering, and check the shelf height if you store large or tall books.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Measure the wall: Check height and width, not just floor space
- Shelf height: Confirm shelves clear your tallest books
- Adjustable shelves: Movable shelves give more flexibility over time
- Wall anchoring: Essential on tall units — see below
- Weight rating: Books are heavy; check the per-shelf load rating
- Flat-pack delivery: All units ship boxed and fit through 80cm doorways
Do bookcases need to be anchored to the wall?
Yes — any bookcase taller than about 120cm should be anchored to the wall, and this is the step most buyers skip. A tall bookcase becomes top-heavy once the upper shelves are loaded, and an unanchored unit can tip forward, especially on carpet or when a child climbs or pulls on it. Most of our taller bookcases include a wall anchor kit — a bracket and strap that fixes the unit to a wall stud. Fitting it takes a few minutes and is the single most important safety step. In any home with young children, anchor every tall unit without exception.
How much does a bookcase cost in Australia?
Bookcases at Simple Deals start from around $50 for compact freestanding and shelf units. Most mid-size bookcases sit between $65 and $130, with larger timber, corner and cube units running higher. All units dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every bookcase sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the bookcase is made is not the real difference between online furniture retailers. What matters is what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from an overseas container, which is why their "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there — the same imported unit, dispatched in 1–2 business days.
Frequently asked questions
What if my bookcase arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack units, and we work to resolve any claim quickly.
Are bookcase shelves strong enough for a full load of books?
Yes, within the per-shelf weight rating listed on the product page. Books are heavier than most other items, so check that figure rather than assuming, especially on wider shelves.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $120 bookcase works out to four payments of $30 with Afterpay, four payments of $30 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $10 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled units in original packaging.
Complete your living room
A bookcase anchors the storage, and a few pieces finish the room. Most buyers add three at the same time: a coffee table for the seating area, a TV unit in a matching finish, and cube storage for boxed and tidied-away items.
