What is a storage bed?
A storage bed is a bed frame with built-in storage under the mattress. There are two main designs. A gas lift bed has a base that hinges upward on a hydraulic strut, opening the entire area under the mattress in one movement. A bed with drawers has fixed drawers set into the base, usually two or four, that pull out from the side or foot. Both reclaim space that an ordinary bed frame wastes, which is why a storage bed suits any room short on wardrobe or cupboard space.
Gas lift or drawers — which storage bed is better?
Both work well, and the right one depends on the room and what you store. A gas lift bed opens the whole base in one lift, so it holds large or bulky items — spare doonas, suitcases, seasonal bedding — and you reach everything at once. It needs clear floor space at the side of the bed so the base can swing up. A "gas lift bed" is also sometimes called an "ottoman bed"; they are the same thing. A bed with drawers gives you smaller, divided compartments that are quicker for everyday items like clothes and linen, and the drawers only need the depth of the drawer itself to open — better when the bed sits close to a wall. As a rule: gas lift for bulky and occasional storage, drawers for everyday items and tighter rooms.
What size storage beds are available?

Single and king single storage beds suit kids' and teen rooms, where the under-bed space handles toys, clothes and spare bedding. Double and queen are the most popular for main bedrooms. King storage beds give the most storage volume but need a larger room — allow at least 80cm of clear space around the bed for movement and, with a gas lift design, room for the base to rise. Confirm the size on the product page and match the mattress to it.
Will a gas lift bed lift my mattress?
A gas lift bed will lift your mattress as long as the mattress weight stays within the gas strut's rating — and this is the detail most sellers leave out. The hydraulic strut is tuned to a weight range. A light foam mattress is no problem. A heavy pocket spring king mattress can weigh 40kg or more, and pairing one with an under-rated strut makes the base hard to lift and can wear the mechanism out within months. Before you buy, check the gas lift weight rating on the product page against the weight of the mattress you plan to use. If you already own a heavy pocket spring mattress, a bed with drawers avoids the issue entirely.

Are storage beds good for small bedrooms and kids' rooms?
Yes — a storage bed is one of the best space savers for a small bedroom or a child's room. It removes the need for a separate storage chest or extra drawers, freeing floor space the room does not have to spare. In a kids' bed with storage, the under-bed drawers or lift base handle toys, clothes and spare bedding, and keep the floor clearer. For a small main bedroom with a limited wardrobe, a queen storage bed can take the place of a chest of drawers altogether.
