An ensemble bed is an upholstered bed base — a solid, fabric-covered platform that a mattress sits on, with no exposed slats or posts. It is the cleanest, simplest way to support a mattress, which is why ensemble bases are a long-standing choice in Australian bedrooms. We stock ensemble bed bases in single, king single, double, queen and king sizes, from around $310. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, so orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.
What is an ensemble bed?
An ensemble bed is a fully upholstered bed base that supports your mattress on a solid or sprung top, wrapped in fabric on all sides. The terms "ensemble" and "bed base" are used for the same thing in Australia. Unlike a slatted timber or metal frame, an ensemble has no visible structure — just a clean fabric-covered box. It can be used on its own for a low, modern look, or paired with a headboard for a more finished bedroom. Most ensemble bases are bought as the base alone, with the mattress chosen separately.
Ensemble base vs slatted frame — what's the difference?
The difference is what sits under your mattress, and it changes how the bed feels. A slatted frame supports the mattress on a row of timber or metal slats with gaps between them. An ensemble base supports the mattress across a continuous upholstered top. That top comes in two forms, and this is the detail most sellers leave out: a solid-top ensemble gives a firmer, more uniform feel, while a sprung-slat ensemble has flexible slats inside the upholstered base for a slightly softer, more cushioned response. The same mattress will feel firmer on a solid base than on a sprung one. Ensembles also have no hard edges or exposed legs, which suits households with young children and makes the bed easier to move.
What size bed bases are available?
Our ensemble bed bases come in single, king single, double, queen and king sizes. Single and king single bases suit children's and guest rooms. Double and queen are the most popular for main bedrooms, with queen the standard choice. King bases give the most sleeping width and need a larger room — allow at least 80cm of clear space around the bed for movement and doorway access. Match the base size to your mattress, and confirm the size on the product page before ordering.
Does an ensemble bed come with a mattress?
Usually not — most ensemble products are sold as the base only, and the mattress is chosen separately. This works in your favour: it lets you pair the base with the exact mattress firmness and type you want, rather than accepting whatever mattress a set includes. Always check the product page to see whether a listing is base-only or a base-and-mattress package, so you know what arrives. If you need a mattress, our mattress range covers every size an ensemble base comes in.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Base feel: Solid top for a firmer feel, sprung slats for a softer one
- Base or set: Check whether the listing is base-only or includes a mattress
- Size match: Confirm the mattress size matches the base
- Room clearance: Allow at least 80cm of clear space around the bed
- Assembly time: Budget 30–60 minutes with basic tools
- Flat-pack delivery: All bases ship boxed and fit through 80cm doorways
Can I get an ensemble base with storage?
Some ensemble bases include storage and some do not, so check the individual product page. A storage ensemble adds either a gas-lift base that hinges up, or built-in drawers along the side, using the space under the mattress that a plain base wastes. If under-bed storage is a priority, our storage bed range is built entirely around gas-lift and drawer designs and gives you more options to compare.
How much does a bed base cost in Australia?
Ensemble bed bases at Simple Deals start from around $310 for single PU leather bases. Most double and queen ensemble bases sit between $390 and $555, with larger king linen-upholstered bases at the higher end. That price is for the base only, unless the listing states otherwise — a mattress is generally a separate purchase. All bases dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every ensemble bed sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the base is made is not the real difference between online furniture retailers. What matters is what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from an overseas container, which is why their "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there — the same imported base, dispatched in 1–2 business days.
Frequently asked questions
What if my ensemble bed arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack bases, and we work to resolve any claim quickly.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $480 ensemble bed base works out to four payments of $120 with Afterpay, four payments of $120 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $40 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled bases in original packaging.
Complete your bedroom
An ensemble base supports the mattress, and a few pieces finish the room. Most buyers add three at the same time: a mattress sized to match the base, a headboard for a finished look against the wall, and bedside tables for a lamp, phone and books.
