Australian beds come in seven standard sizes, from the 92cm-wide Single to the 203cm-wide Super King. This guide lists the exact dimensions of every standard bed size in Australia in centimetres and millimetres, shows how much bedroom space each size needs, and explains how Australian sizes differ from US and UK bedding — a common trap when buying sheets or frames from overseas sites. All measurements follow the Australian standard, and mattress and frame sizes match by name: a Queen mattress fits a Queen frame. We keep more than 1,600 bed frames and mattresses in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses.
Australian bed and mattress size chart
| Size | Width × Length (cm) | Width × Length (mm) | Width × Length (inches) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 92 × 188 | 920 × 1880 | 36 × 74 |
| Long Single | 92 × 203 | 920 × 2030 | 36 × 80 |
| King Single | 107 × 203 | 1070 × 2030 | 42 × 80 |
| Double | 138 × 188 | 1380 × 1880 | 54 × 74 |
| Queen | 153 × 203 | 1530 × 2030 | 60 × 80 |
| King | 183 × 203 | 1830 × 2030 | 72 × 80 |
| Super King | 203 × 203 | 2030 × 2030 | 80 × 80 |
Dimensions are the mattress size. Bed frames add roughly 5–15cm to each side depending on the design, and more again for frames with wide headboards or storage wings — always check the frame's outer dimensions on the product page before measuring your room.
What size is a queen bed in Australia?
An Australian queen bed is 153cm wide and 203cm long (1530mm × 2030mm) — if you're looking up queen size bed dimensions, that's the number to match when buying sheets or a frame. It is the most common size for couples and main bedrooms in Australia, offering 76.5cm of width per person — about 7cm more each than a double. Note that both the Double and the Single are 188cm long, while every size from King Single up runs 203cm, so taller sleepers moving from a double to a queen gain length as well as width.
Are Australian bed sizes the same as the US and UK?
No — and this is the most expensive mistake in online bedding. Australian, US and UK sizes use similar names for different dimensions, so sheets or frames bought from overseas stores often won't fit a local mattress:
| Size name | Australia | United States | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double | 138 × 188 cm | 135 × 190 cm ("Full") | 135 × 190 cm |
| Queen | 153 × 203 cm | 152 × 203 cm | 150 × 200 cm ("King") |
| King | 183 × 203 cm | 193 × 203 cm | 180 × 200 cm ("Super King") |
The practical rule: a UK "King" is closest to an Australian Queen, and a US King is 10cm wider than an Australian King. When buying sheets from international sites, match the centimetre measurements, never the size name.
What size bed fits your room?
Allow at least 60cm of walking space on each side of the bed you use to get in and out, and ideally the same at the foot. As comfortable minimum room sizes, that works out to roughly:
| Bed size | Comfortable minimum room size |
|---|---|
| Single / Long Single | 2.4m × 2.9m |
| King Single | 2.6m × 3.0m |
| Double | 3.0m × 3.0m |
| Queen | 3.2m × 3.2m |
| King | 3.5m × 3.4m |
| Super King | 3.7m × 3.4m |
These are guidelines rather than standards — wardrobes, drawers and door swings all reduce usable space. Measure the room, then subtract furniture before choosing.
Quick tips for choosing between sizes
- Children outgrowing a cot usually start on a Single; choosing a King Single instead adds 15cm of length and typically lasts through the teenage years
- A Long Single suits tall teens and single adults in narrow rooms — Queen length on a Single width
- Queen is the default for couples; move up to a king size bed only if the room comfortably exceeds 3.5m in width
- King and Super King bases often ship in two pieces — check doorway, hallway and stair access for the base sections, not just the mattress

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a double and a queen bed?
A queen is 15cm wider and 15cm longer than a double — 153 × 203cm versus 138 × 188cm. Two adults fit on either, but a double gives each person only 69cm of width, less than a Single each.
Is a king single longer than a single bed?
Yes. The king single bed size is 107 × 203cm — 15cm longer and 15cm wider than a standard single's 92 × 188cm. It shares its 203cm length with Queen, King and Super King beds.
Will a queen mattress fit a double bed frame?
No. A queen mattress is 15cm wider and 15cm longer than a double frame is built for, so it will overhang or simply not sit in the frame. Mattress and frame must always match by size name.
Do Australian sheet sizes match these bed sizes?
Yes — Australian-made sheets are labelled with the same size names and fit the dimensions in the chart above. The exception to watch is fitted-sheet depth: thicker mattresses (over about 30cm) need "deep wall" fitted sheets regardless of size.
