Strapping and compression gear covers the supportive equipment that protects joints during heavy lifting, prevents injuries during high-impact training, and aids recovery after intense workouts. Our range covers knee sleeves and supports (single and double-ply), elbow sleeves and wraps, wrist wraps and supports, lifting belts, ankle supports, compression sleeves for legs and arms, sports tape (kinesiology and rigid), and back support belts. Over 15 strapping and compression products in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $15 sports tape rolls to $150 powerlifting belts. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.
Do I actually need strapping and compression gear?
It depends on your training load. For general fitness (3–4 sessions per week, moderate weights), most people don't need any strapping gear — joints adapt to the loads if you progress gradually. For heavy strength training (squats above 1.5x bodyweight, bench above bodyweight), knee sleeves and a lifting belt become valuable: knee sleeves keep the joint warm and provide proprioceptive feedback under load; a belt increases intra-abdominal pressure for safer heavy lifts. For people with existing joint issues (history of knee or elbow injury, arthritis, tendinopathy), compression and supports help manage daily training even at lower loads. The mistake beginners make is buying belts and sleeves before they need them — the gear is a tool for specific situations, not training equipment to use every session.
What strapping and compression is available?
| Item | Best for | Price guide | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knee sleeves (5–7mm neoprene) | Heavy squats, warm joints | $30–$120 per pair | 2–4 years |
| Elbow sleeves | Heavy bench, tendinopathy | $25–$80 per pair | 2–4 years |
| Wrist wraps | Heavy press, wrist support | $20–$60 per pair | 2–3 years |
| Lifting belt (4–6") | Heavy squats, deadlifts | $40–$200 | 10–15 years |
| Ankle supports | Sprained ankles, basketball | $20–$60 | 2–3 years |
| Compression sleeves (legs/arms) | Recovery, circulation | $25–$80 | 1–2 years |
| Sports tape (kinesiology) | Muscle support, mild injuries | $15–$30 per roll | Single use |
| Rigid tape | Joint immobilisation | $10–$25 per roll | Single use |
How do I choose the right knee sleeve thickness?
Sleeve thickness affects compression and warmth versus mobility. 3mm sleeves are thin and stretchy — minimal compression, used for warmth and circulation during running or long sessions. 5mm sleeves are the standard for general strength training — enough compression to support the knee, enough mobility for full squat depth. 7mm sleeves provide much stronger compression — used by powerlifters for heavy squats, but reduce knee flexion enough to make full ROM uncomfortable for most lifters. Beginners and general gym users: 5mm. Powerlifters squatting above 2x bodyweight: 7mm. For tight fit, measure your knee with the leg straight and match to the size chart — if between sizes, go down a size for stronger compression or up for comfort.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Knee sleeve thickness: 5mm general training; 7mm powerlifting
- Belt width: 4" for bench and overhead; 6" max for squats and deadlifts
- Belt buckle: Lever buckle is fastest; prong buckle infinitely adjustable
- Wrist wrap length: 30cm for general use; 60cm+ for heavy bench/press
- Tape choice: Kinesio for muscle support; rigid for joint immobilisation
- Sizing: Measure with the muscle relaxed; tight fit is the goal
Lifting belt — lever or prong buckle?
Both work; the difference is speed and adjustability. Prong buckles (traditional belt design with holes and a metal prong) are infinitely adjustable as your waist size changes, and they're cheaper. The downside is putting them on and taking them off between sets is slow — 30–60 seconds per change, which adds up over a session. Lever buckles (single-action lever) snap open and closed in 1–2 seconds, making them faster between heavy sets. The trade-off is they're set to one waist size at a time — changing tightness requires a screwdriver to move the lever position (5-minute job, but not something you do mid-session). For most home lifters, a quality prong-buckle 10mm leather belt is the practical choice; lever buckles suit dedicated powerlifters and people who lift with a partner trading the belt between sets.
How much should I spend on strapping gear?
For a general strength training kit: $100–150 covers a pair of 5mm knee sleeves ($60–80), wrist wraps ($30–40), and a basic lifting belt ($40–80). Adding elbow sleeves and compression gear runs another $50–100. The lifting belt is the longest-lasting investment — a quality 10mm leather belt outlasts decades of use; cheap nylon belts wear out in 1–2 years. Knee sleeves last 2–4 years before the elastic loses compression. For a serious powerlifter, the full kit (belt, sleeves, wraps) runs $200–500 but the gear lasts the rest of a lifting career.
What most fitness stores won't admit
Almost every strapping and compression product sold online in Australia is imported from China or Pakistan — including ours. The real difference is not where the gear is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: strapping gear gives a placebo-effect boost that's larger than the actual mechanical support, especially with knee sleeves and lifting belts. Studies on neoprene knee sleeves show the actual joint stiffness reduction is modest — most of the benefit comes from warmth, proprioception (joint position feedback to the brain) and the lifter's psychological confidence. This isn't a bad thing — the confidence boost lets lifters perform safer reps under heavy load. But understand what you're buying: sleeves don't "protect" a knee in any structural way; they warm the joint and give your brain better awareness of where the joint is in space. The structural protection comes from lifting technique, not from the sleeve.
Frequently asked questions
What if my gear arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with packaged compression gear.
How tight should compression gear feel?
Snug but not painful. You should feel firm even pressure around the joint or limb, but no tingling, numbness, or restricted blood flow. If the gear changes the colour of skin past the compression point, it's too tight.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $150 strapping kit works out to four payments of $37.50 with Afterpay, four payments of $37.50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or a small monthly amount with Zip. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused items in original packaging.
Complete the training support setup
Strapping and compression cover the joint support, and a few pieces round out a complete training and recovery kit. Most lifters add three at the same time: a weights set for progressive overload, a bench and rack for safe heavy lifts, and mats and foam rollers for post-session recovery.
