Weights

Weights and kettlebells form the foundation of any strength training program — at home or in a commercial gym. Our range covers fixed-weight dumbbells, adjustable dumbbell sets, cast iron and vinyl-coated kettlebells, Olympic barbells, EZ-curl bars, dumbbell racks, and weight bench combo sets. Over 90 weight options in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $30 single dumbbells to $800 full adjustable dumbbell sets. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.

Adjustable dumbbells or fixed-weight set?

Adjustable dumbbells are the right answer for almost everyone training at home. A single adjustable dumbbell handle plus a stack of plates replaces 10–15 pairs of fixed dumbbells, takes 1/10th of the floor space, and costs less than buying the equivalent fixed dumbbells. The trade-off is changing weights between exercises takes 10–20 seconds versus just picking up the next dumbbell — fine for home use, slow for circuit-style training. Fixed-weight dumbbells suit commercial gyms and people doing high-volume circuits. For most home users, a 24kg or 40kg adjustable dumbbell pair handles beginner-to-intermediate work, with a 5–10kg pair added separately for warm-up and light isolation work.

What weights and kettlebells are available?

Type Best for Price guide Lifespan
Fixed dumbbells (pair) Fast changeovers $3–$8 per kg 15–20+ years
Adjustable dumbbells Home use, space saving $200–$800 per pair 10–15 years
Cast iron kettlebells Compact strength training $4–$8 per kg 20+ years
Vinyl-coated kettlebells Indoor use, floor protection $5–$10 per kg 10–15 years
Olympic barbells Heavy compound lifts $150–$500 20+ years
EZ-curl bars Bicep and tricep work $60–$200 15+ years
Olympic weight plates Bar loading $3–$8 per kg 20+ years

What weight should I start with?

The honest answer: lighter than you think. For a 70–85kg adult new to training, start with a pair of 5kg dumbbells for upper-body isolation (curls, raises, tricep extensions) and 8–10kg dumbbells for upper-body compound work (rows, presses). For squats and other lower-body work with dumbbells, 10–15kg per dumbbell handles beginners. For barbell work, an empty 20kg Olympic bar is the starting weight for most adults; add 2.5–5kg plates as the lifts feel manageable. Buying weights too heavy at the start leads to bad form, injuries, and unused gear. You can always add more plates later — you can't easily return them once unwrapped.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Adjustable vs fixed: Adjustable for space, fixed for speed
  • Material: Cast iron for longevity; rubber-coated for floor protection
  • Plate compatibility: Olympic 50mm is the standard; avoid 25mm "standard"
  • Grip diameter: 28–30mm for normal lifting; 32mm+ for thick-bar work
  • Knurling: Aggressive knurling helps heavy lifts; smooth grips for casual use
  • Capacity: Adjustable dumbbells rated to 24kg+ cover beginner to intermediate

Kettlebell or dumbbell — which is more useful?

They train different things. Kettlebells suit dynamic, full-body movements — swings, cleans, snatches, Turkish get-ups. The offset weight distribution makes them harder to control, which builds core stability and grip strength. Dumbbells suit static lifts — presses, rows, curls, lunges — where the symmetric weight is the easiest to control. Most home gyms benefit from having both: a pair of medium dumbbells (or adjustable set) for the bulk of strength work, plus a single moderate kettlebell (12–16kg for women, 16–24kg for men) for swings and conditioning work. The kettlebell is one of the cheapest additions that opens up a lot of new exercises.

How much do weights and kettlebells cost in Australia?

Weights and kettlebells at Simple Deals start from $30 for single light dumbbells and 4kg kettlebells. Most quality kettlebell sets and barbells sit between $100 and $400, with full adjustable dumbbell sets running higher. All weights dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.

What most fitness stores won't admit

Almost every weight and kettlebell sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the weights are made, it's what happens after they land in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions: the advertised weight of cheap kettlebells often varies by 5–10% from the actual weight. A "16kg" kettlebell might weigh 15.2kg or 17.1kg — not a problem for general fitness, but a real issue for competition training or anyone tracking progressive overload precisely. If exact weight matters, look for competition-grade kettlebells (colour-coded by weight, certified ±50g accuracy) which cost about double a standard cast iron kettlebell. Standard cast iron kettlebells are fine for the other 95% of home users.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights arrive damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Cast iron weights are exceptionally durable in transit, but rubber and vinyl coatings can split if dropped during handling.

Are these weights Olympic standard?
Most barbells, plates and dumbbell handles are Olympic 50mm sleeve. Check the product page for older 25mm "standard" gear, which doesn't fit modern Olympic equipment.

How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days. Heavy weight orders take 1–2 days longer due to freight.

Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $400 weight setup works out to four payments of $100 with Afterpay, four payments of $100 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $33 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.

What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused weights in original packaging.

Complete the strength setup

Weights cover the foundation, and a few pieces round out the home strength setup. Most lifters add three at the same time: a bench and rack for safer heavy lifts, gym accessories for flooring and storage, and a yoga mat for warm-up, cool-down and recovery work.
