Boxing & MMA

Boxing and MMA gear covers the specific training equipment for stand-up striking and mixed-martial-arts work — heavy bags, free-standing punching bags, focus mitts, Thai pads, grappling gloves, headgear, and ring accessories. Our range covers hanging heavy bags (filled and unfilled), free-standing punching bags with weighted bases, focus mitts and Thai kick pads, MMA hybrid gloves, boxing gloves (12oz–16oz), headgear and groin protection, mouthguards, and skipping ropes. Over 25 boxing and MMA products in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $30 mouthguards to $500 commercial-grade punching bag stations. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.

Boxing or MMA — what gear is different?

Boxing uses hands only, so the training focuses on stand-up punching: boxing gloves (12–16oz), hand wraps, heavy bag, focus mitts, speed bag, and a skipping rope. The gloves are puffy with rigid wrist support and no finger separation. MMA includes hands, feet, knees, elbows and grappling on the ground, so the gear list expands: hybrid MMA gloves (open-fingered, much smaller, allow grabbing), shin guards, headgear with cheek protection, mouthguards (essential, not optional), and grappling mats. MMA training also uses heavy bags but adds kick-specific Thai pads and round bags. The gear isn't interchangeable — a 14oz boxing glove won't work for MMA sparring (can't grip or grapple), and a 6oz MMA glove offers no padding for sustained bag work.

How do I choose a punching bag for home use?

Bag weight should match your bodyweight: a 75kg person needs a bag around 45kg (60% of bodyweight). A heavier bag absorbs power punches better and stays stationary for combinations; a lighter bag swings too much for serious training. Bag height should reach from your chin to your knees — typically 1.2–1.5m for adult use. Free-standing bags work in apartments and rental homes where ceiling mounting isn't possible; the base fills with water (50–80L typical) or sand for stability. Hanging bags need a solid ceiling joist or steel beam capable of supporting 80–100kg of dynamic load — the punching force more than doubles the bag's static weight. For most home users, a 45–60kg free-standing bag with a 70L base is the practical choice; serious trainers benefit from a hanging 50–70kg bag mounted properly.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Bag weight: 60% of your bodyweight for proper power transfer
  • Bag fill: Sand or shredded textile; avoid pure water-filled (slosh)
  • Glove weight: 12oz for bag work; 14–16oz for sparring
  • MMA glove: Open-fingered, 4–6oz, allows grip and grapple
  • Mouthguard: Boil-and-bite custom fit; never spar without one
  • Headgear: Full cheek and chin protection for MMA; cheekless OK for pure boxing

Do I need a coach to use this gear safely?

For bag work and basic technique training, no — anyone can train alone with a heavy bag, focus mitts (with a partner), or shadow boxing. For sparring or any contact training, yes — sparring without a coach watching is how injuries (concussions, dental damage, broken hands) happen. Most people training at home use the bag for cardio and technique, and join a gym 1–2 times a week for pad work, sparring and supervised drilling. The home gear handles 80% of the training, the coach handles the dangerous parts. Don't try to spar with friends without supervision — hand and head injuries from amateur sparring are common and often permanent.

How much do boxing and MMA setups cost in Australia?

Boxing and MMA gear at Simple Deals starts from $10 for mouthguards. A solo training setup (gloves, wraps, free-standing bag, jump rope) typically runs $400–700. Adding sparring gear (headgear, shin guards, mouthguard) adds $150–300. All gear dispatches within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.

What most fitness stores won't admit

Almost every boxing and MMA product sold online in Australia is imported from China, Thailand or Pakistan — including ours. Even premium brand-name gloves are usually manufactured in Pakistan and finished or branded in the US, UK or Thailand. The real difference is not where the gear is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions: free-standing punching bags wobble far more in real use than the demo videos suggest. The bag's stability depends entirely on the base weight — a bag with a 50L water-filled base (50kg) will tip on hard hooks from anyone over 75kg. The fix is filling the base with sand (heavier than water by volume, around 80kg for 50L) or buying a bag with a 70–80L base capacity. The other fix is mounting a hanging bag, which doesn't have this issue at all but requires ceiling mounting. Free-standing bags are convenient but compromise on stability — plan for it before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What if my gear arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with packaged gear; check glove stitching and bag seams on receipt.

How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days. Heavy bags take 1–2 days longer due to freight.

Is the bag filled or unfilled?
Most heavy bags arrive unfilled to reduce shipping cost. Fill with shredded textile (preferred), sand, or a mix; never pure water. Free-standing bag bases fill with water or sand on site.

Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $400 starter kit works out to four payments of $100 with Afterpay, four payments of $100 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $33 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.

What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused gear in original packaging.

Complete the boxing and MMA setup

Boxing and MMA gear covers the technical training, and a few pieces round out the conditioning side. Most fighters add three at the same time: a martial arts kit for grappling gear if you do BJJ or wrestling, weights and kettlebells for strength conditioning, and a strapping and compression kit for joint support and injury prevention.
