Benches & Racks

Benches and racks are the structural backbone of any home strength training setup — they support the safe execution of bench press, squat, overhead press and rowing movements with heavy weights. Our range covers flat workout benches, adjustable incline/decline benches, Olympic flat benches, power racks (4-post cages), squat stands (2-post), half racks, and combo bench-and-rack packages. Over 30 bench and rack options in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $100 flat benches to $1,500 commercial-grade power racks. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.

What bench and rack combination should I buy?

The right combination depends on your lifting goals. For general fitness and beginner-to-intermediate strength training, a flat adjustable bench plus a basic squat stand covers 90% of lifts — around $300–500 total. For serious strength training with heavier weights and the safest setup, a power rack with safety bars plus an adjustable bench covers all major lifts including failed-rep safety — around $700–1,300 total. For powerlifters and advanced trainers, a competition-rated flat bench plus a heavy-duty power rack with monolift attachments runs $1,200–2,000+. Most home users underspend on the bench (which they use every session) and overspend on attachments they rarely use. Buy the bench properly.

Adjustable bench or fixed flat bench?

An adjustable bench is the more versatile choice for almost every home user. The ability to incline (for incline bench press, shoulder press, incline dumbbell rows) and decline opens up around 15–20 additional exercises that a flat-only bench can't do. The cost difference is roughly 50–80% — a $150 flat bench versus a $250 adjustable bench. The trade-off is adjustable benches are usually slightly less rigid than flat benches at the same price (the adjustment mechanism is a weak point) and can wobble under heavy bench press loads if the build quality is low. For lifters benching 100kg+, look for adjustable benches rated to 300kg+ with reinforced adjustment mechanisms; competition flat benches stay perfectly rigid but limit you to flat work.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Weight rating: Buy a bench rated 50% above your max lifts
  • Pad thickness: 5–7cm of dense foam handles long sessions
  • Pad width: 25cm+ for stable bench press; narrower for rows
  • Rack hole spacing: 50mm holes give precise bar height settings
  • Safety bars: Essential for solo training; catch failed reps
  • Footprint: Measure assembled width plus 60cm side clearance

How much weight should the bench handle?

The bench's weight rating includes both the lifter and the weight on the barbell — a common confusion. A bench rated to 300kg total handles a 100kg lifter with 200kg on the bar, which is more than most home lifters will ever need. For competition powerlifters or anyone benching close to 200kg, look at benches rated 500kg+. For most home users, 250–300kg ratings are sufficient and the build quality usually scales with the rating. The mistake people make is buying lightweight benches (under 200kg rating) for the price savings, then finding the bench wobbles under medium-heavy loads. The $50–100 saving usually isn't worth it.

What most fitness stores won't admit

Almost every bench and rack sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the equipment is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions: cheap power racks often have hole spacing that's wider than 50mm. Industry standard is 50mm hole spacing, but some budget racks use 75mm or 100mm spacing to save manufacturing cost. The problem: the bar height for bench press needs to be within about 2cm of perfect to avoid awkward arm angles, and 75mm spacing means you're often unable to find the right setting. Always check the hole spacing on a rack before buying — 50mm is the standard; anything wider is a budget cut that affects daily use.

Complete the strength setup

A bench and rack form the structure, and a few pieces round out a serious home gym. Most lifters add three at the same time: a weights set with barbell and plates, gym accessories for flooring and storage, and a fitness accessories starter like a yoga mat and foam roller for warm-up and recovery.
