A skateboard gets older kids moving outside, builds balance and coordination, and lasts through years of growth. Our range covers kids' beginner skateboards, mid-range trick boards, longboards for cruising, and electric skateboards. Most ship fully assembled and ready to ride. Skateboards from $50, with most quality beginner-to-intermediate boards between $80 and $200. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, dispatching within 1–2 business days.
What age can kids start skateboarding?
Most kids can start at 5 or 6 years old with a small board and supervision. Younger than that, balance and core strength are not developed enough — the child spends more time falling than learning, which puts them off. From 6 to 8, kids learn to push, balance and turn. From 8 onwards they can start basic tricks if interested. Always start with a helmet — it is not optional and most skateboarding head injuries happen to kids without one. Knee and elbow pads are also recommended for the first 6–12 months while balance is developing.
What types of skateboards are available?
| Type | Best for | Board length | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kids' beginner skateboard | Ages 5–8 | 27–29 inches | $50–$100 |
| Standard skateboard | Ages 8+ | 30–32 inches | $80–$200 |
| Longboard / cruiser | Cruising, downhill | 32–40 inches | $100–$250 |
| Mini cruiser | Portable, smaller riders | 22–27 inches | $60–$150 |
| Electric skateboard | Older teens, commute | 30–38 inches | $300–$700 |
What size skateboard does my child need?
Board width matters more than length for a beginner. A smaller child (under 130cm tall) suits a 7.0–7.5 inch wide deck — narrower boards are easier to balance on with small feet. A bigger child (130–150cm) suits 7.5–8.0 inches. Once a rider is teen-sized, standard 8.0–8.25 inch boards work. Length matters less but follows a similar pattern: 27–29 inches for under-130cm, 30–32 inches for taller. Avoid buying a full-size adult board for a 6-year-old "to grow into" — they will not learn on it because the board is unmanageably large.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Deck width: Match to child's height, not age
- Wheels: Soft (78A–87A) for cruising, harder for tricks
- Trucks: Should match the deck width for stability
- Grip tape: Coarse for tricks, fine for cruising
- Helmet: Mandatory — buy at the same time as the board
- Pads: Knee and elbow pads for the first 6–12 months
Is skateboarding safe for kids?
It is safe when the child wears protective gear and learns in appropriate places. A helmet prevents the worst injuries; most non-helmet skateboard accidents that end in hospital are head injuries. Knee and elbow pads prevent scrapes during the early balance phase. Learn on flat, smooth surfaces — a smooth driveway, a flat tennis court, an indoor sports hall — not on a sloping road or rough concrete. Never skateboard on roads with traffic; most council areas have skate parks and footpath networks that are appropriate. Falls are part of learning; gear and surface choice decide whether a fall is a scrape or a hospital visit.
How much do kids' skateboards cost in Australia?
Kids' skateboards at Simple Deals start from $50 for beginner boards. Most mid-range skateboards and cruisers sit between $80 and $200, with longboards and electric skateboards running higher. All boards dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most sites won't admit
Almost every skateboard sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the board is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: the bearings and bushings are the failure points on cheap boards, not the deck. A $50 skateboard usually has the same hardwood deck as a $150 one; the difference is the bearing quality (smoothness and lifespan) and the bushing quality (turn response). Cheap bearings seize up within 6 months of outdoor use. If you find an older skateboard with rough wheels, the bearings are usually the issue — a $15 set of replacement bearings extends a basic board's life by years.
Frequently asked questions
What if my skateboard arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with boxed skateboards.
Is the skateboard fully assembled?
Yes — most skateboards ship fully assembled and ready to ride. Some allow you to swap wheels or trucks separately for customisation.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $150 skateboard works out to four payments of $37.50 with Afterpay, four payments of $37.50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or a small monthly amount with Zip. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused boards in original packaging.
Complete the wheels setup
A skateboard handles the riding, and a few pieces round out the kids' wheels collection. Most parents add three at the same time: a scooter for footpath cruising, a bike for longer rides, and a helmet (sold separately in our range).
