What does the voltage actually mean?
The battery voltage (6V, 12V, 24V) decides the top speed and the weight the car can move. 6V cars top out around 3–5 km/h — a fast walk, suitable for very young drivers on smooth flat surfaces. 12V cars reach 5–7 km/h, which is the most popular range because it feels like driving without being scary fast. 24V cars reach 7–10 km/h and have stronger motors that handle grass, gentle slopes and heavier kids. Higher voltage also means longer run time per charge (most 12V batteries last 1–2 hours; 24V batteries 2–3 hours). Match the voltage to the child's age and the surface they will drive on — a 24V car on a sloping driveway is too fast for a 3-year-old.

The reality with kids is that any ride-on car gets used in 15–20 minute bursts — a charge usually lasts a week of normal use. Charging takes 8–12 hours for a full battery, so plug in overnight rather than expecting fast turn-around. Battery life over years is the bigger consideration. Sealed lead-acid batteries (most cheaper ride-ons) last 18–24 months before they hold less charge. Lithium-ion batteries (some premium models) last 4–6 years.
