Can you clip a dog's nails at home safely?
Yes, with the right clippers and slow introduction. Scissor-style clippers for small dogs and puppies. Guillotine or heavy-duty scissor clippers for medium and large dogs. The trick is to only take small amounts each time until you see the pale grey circle that marks the start of the quick. What's the best way to groom a matted coat?
Do not try to brush out heavy mats — it's painful for the dog and rarely works. Clip the mats out with a #10 blade under the mat, then work the coat back to health with regular brushing and de-shedding tools. Prevention (weekly brushing) beats matting recovery every time. Wet coats mat faster than dry ones — dry thoroughly after every bath, including under the collar and behind the ears where mats form first.
