What pests should I be watching for on my pets?

Different pests affect different pets. Dogs and cats face fleas, ticks (paralysis ticks in coastal regions are life-threatening), and intestinal worms. Chickens and other poultry suffer from red mites, lice, and worms. Rabbits and guinea pigs get fur mites and ear mites. Reptiles and birds get external mites. Paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) are a serious threat in eastern coastal Australia from Queensland to Victoria. The tick injects a neurotoxin that paralyses dogs and cats progressively over 3–7 days. Without veterinary treatment, paralysis ticks are often fatal. Vet treatment can run $1,000–$5,000 and recovery takes weeks. Prevention is the only sensible approach: a monthly tick preventive (oral chew or topical spot-on, depending on the product) plus daily tick searches when returning from bush walks, beaches or backyards backing onto bushland. If you find an attached tick, remove it immediately and watch for paralysis symptoms (wobbly back legs, changed bark, breathing difficulty) for 3–4 days.

Are rodent baits safe to use around pets?

Standard rodenticide baits are not safe — dogs and cats eat the bait directly or eat poisoned rodents (secondary poisoning), and both routes can be fatal. Pet-safe rodent control uses different strategies: enclosed bait stations that only mice and rats can enter (pets can't reach the bait inside), mechanical snap traps placed in pet-inaccessible locations, or non-toxic deterrents like ultrasonic devices. For coop areas where you can't separate the pets from the bait, mechanical traps in bait stations are the safest option. Never use loose pellet bait in a yard where pets have access — the secondary-poisoning risk is too high.

What most pet stores won't admit
