Pet cages house birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and other small pets indoors or in covered outdoor areas. Our range covers bird cages (parrot, budgie, finch), rabbit and guinea pig indoor cages, multi-level small pet cages, travel cages, and large flight aviaries. Over 70 cages in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $50 small bird cages to $400 large flight aviaries. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.
What size cage does my pet need?
Cage size requirements vary by species, but the rule is straightforward: the bird or animal should be able to fully extend their wings or stretch out, move around freely, and have separated zones for eating, sleeping and elimination. For a single budgie, minimum 50cm x 50cm x 70cm tall. For a single cockatiel, 60cm x 60cm x 80cm. For two budgies or a single small parrot, 80cm x 60cm x 90cm. For rabbits, 1.2m x 60cm minimum for a single rabbit, with daily out-of-cage exercise. For guinea pigs, 1m x 60cm minimum for two pigs. Under-sized cages cause behavioural issues (feather plucking in birds, lethargy in mammals) and shorter lifespans.
What types of pet cages are available?
| Type | Best for | Size | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bird cage | Budgies, finches, canaries | 50–60cm wide | $50–$120 |
| Medium parrot cage | Cockatiels, conures | 60–80cm wide | $100–$250 |
| Large parrot cage | Galahs, eclectus, macaws | 80cm+ wide | $250–$700 |
| Rabbit / guinea pig cage | Indoor small mammals | 1–1.5m wide | $80–$250 |
| Multi-level small pet cage | Ferrets, rats, sugar gliders | 50–80cm wide | $100–$300 |
| Flight aviary | Multiple birds, breeding | 1.5m+ wide | $250–$700 |
What bar spacing do I need?
Bar spacing is the dimension most cage shoppers overlook — and it matters for both safety and species suitability. Wider bars let smaller birds escape; bars too narrow stop larger birds from climbing properly. For budgies and finches, 10–12mm spacing. For cockatiels and conures, 14–16mm. For larger parrots, 19–25mm. For rabbits and guinea pigs, 25–40mm. Check the bar spacing on the product page before buying — a cage labelled "small bird" may have 16mm bars that let a budgie escape. Vertical bars suit climbers (parrots, ferrets); horizontal bars suit perching birds.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Size: Minimum 2x the wingspan of birds, or stretch length of mammals
- Bar spacing: Match to species — the size most often overlooked
- Door size: Big enough to reach in for cleaning and the pet to come out
- Pull-out tray: Essential for daily cleaning
- Material: Powder-coated wire — zinc and lead-free for parrots
- Perches or platforms: Variety of diameters and textures benefits foot health
Where should the cage go in the house?
Bird and small pet cages benefit from being in the family living area, not isolated in a back room. Birds are social and become withdrawn if kept alone in quiet spaces; rabbits and guinea pigs interact more when they can see the household. Avoid direct sunlight (overheating), draughts (open windows, aircon vents), and kitchens (cooking fumes from non-stick pans are toxic to birds). The corner of a living room or open-plan area works well. Height matters too — prey-instinct birds and small mammals feel safer when the cage is at eye level or above, not on the floor.
How much do pet cages cost in Australia?
Pet cages at Simple Deals start from $50 for compact bird cages. Most quality medium parrot and rabbit cages sit between $100 and $250, with large parrot cages and flight aviaries running higher. All cages dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most pet stores won't admit
Almost every pet cage sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the cage is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: cage size marketing skews small. A cage labelled "medium parrot" is often barely adequate for a cockatiel, with no room for the bird to fully extend its wings sideways. The official welfare guidelines for birds (RSPCA Australia, etc.) all suggest sizes at the high end of, or above, the cage industry's category labels. As a rough rule: if a cage seems "about right" by sight, go one size up. The space difference makes a real welfare difference and the pet will use it.
Frequently asked questions
What if my cage arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack cages, but check the bar welds for breaks on receipt.
How long does assembly take?
Small bird cages: 5–15 minutes. Medium parrot and rabbit cages: 20–45 minutes. Large parrot cages and aviaries: 60–120 minutes. Tools and instructions are included.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $200 cage works out to four payments of $50 with Afterpay, four payments of $50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $17 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled cages in original packaging.
Complete the indoor pet setup
A cage handles the indoor housing, and a few pieces complete the small-pet kit. Most owners add three at the same time: a bird supplies starter or small pet hutch for outdoor time, a comfortable bedding or hide for inside the cage, and a carrier for vet trips.
