What boxing gear does a beginner actually need?
Five items cover the first six months of training at home or at a gym. Boxing gloves (12oz or 14oz for general training; lighter for speed work). Hand wraps (180cm or 4.5m wraps; never train without them — they protect your hands). A heavy bag or free-standing punching bag (for solo work) or focus mitts (for partner work). A jump rope (essential for footwork and cardio). A mouthguard (essential if you spar; useful for solo bag work to develop the habit). Total kit cost runs around $150–300. Add headgear, shin guards and groin protection only when you start sparring with a partner.

What weight gloves should I buy?
Match glove weight to your bodyweight and use. For bag and mitt work, 10oz suits lighter users (under 65kg), 12oz for 65–80kg, 14oz for 80–100kg, and 16oz for over 100kg. Sparring glove weight goes up: 14oz minimum for any adult sparring, 16oz preferred. Lighter gloves (8–10oz) are competition gloves used in actual fights, not training — they offer minimum padding and protect the wearer's hand but not the opponent. The mistake beginners make is buying 10oz gloves because they look like "real" boxing gloves; the inadequate padding causes hand and knuckle injuries within months of training. Go heavier for training; lighter only for the rare competition or testing.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Glove weight: 12oz for general training under 80kg; 14oz for over 80kg
- Glove construction: Leather lasts longer than synthetic; both are fine
- Wrist support: Lace-up wraps tighter; velcro is faster on and off
- Heavy bag weight: 60% of your bodyweight (a 75kg person needs a 45kg bag)
- Bag mounting: Ceiling joist for hanging; concrete-filled base for free-standing
- Mat density: High-density EVA foam for grappling; PVC for striking
Free-standing or hanging punching bag?
Hanging bags are better for power work and traditional boxing training. They allow full-power punches (the bag absorbs and dissipates the energy properly) and develop the timing needed for moving targets. Mounting requires a solid ceiling joist or steel beam capable of holding 50–80kg of dynamic load — not all houses have suitable mounting points. Free-standing bags suit apartments and rented homes where ceiling mounting isn't possible. They don't transfer force as well as hanging bags (the base absorbs some energy), so they feel slightly "dead" on hard punches, but they're far more practical. Look for free-standing bags with bases that hold 70–80kg of water or sand; cheaper bases (under 50kg) tip on hard kicks. For serious training, hanging is better; for practical home use, free-standing usually wins.
How much do martial arts and boxing supplies cost in Australia?
Martial arts and boxing gear at Simple Deals starts from $15 for hand wraps. Most gloves and focus mitts sit between $40 and $150, with heavy bags and free-standing punching bags running higher. All gear dispatches within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most martial arts shops won't admit
Almost every martial arts and boxing product sold online in Australia is imported from China, Thailand or Pakistan — including ours. Even premium-brand gloves are usually manufactured in Pakistan and finished in the US or UK. The real difference is not where the gear is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: boxing gloves smell terrible after 6–12 months without care. Sweat soaks into the inner padding, bacteria grow in the moisture, and the smell becomes permanent. The fix is straightforward: take the gloves off after every session, wipe the inside with a damp cloth and an antibacterial wipe, then stuff them with newspaper overnight to absorb moisture. Glove deodorisers help. Two pairs of gloves rotated through use (one pair drying while the other is in use) doubles the gloves' useful life and prevents the bacterial buildup that causes hand infections in heavy users.
Frequently asked questions
What if my gear arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with packaged boxing gear; check glove stitching and bag seams on receipt.
Are these gloves OK for sparring?
Most gloves 14oz and above are suitable for controlled sparring. Lighter gloves (10–12oz) are bag and pad gloves — don't spar with them, they don't protect your partner.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days. Heavy punching bags take 1–2 days longer.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $200 starter kit works out to four payments of $50 with Afterpay, four payments of $50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $17 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused gear in original packaging.
Complete the combat sports setup
Martial arts and boxing gear covers the technical training, and a few pieces round out the conditioning side. Most fighters add three at the same time: a boxing and MMA deeper kit if you compete, weights and kettlebells for strength conditioning, and a foam roller and yoga mat for the recovery work fighters need.
