Kennels

A dog kennel gives your dog a weatherproof outdoor space — shelter from sun, rain and wind, and a den that feels safe. Our range covers timber kennels, plastic moulded kennels, large insulated kennels for cold climates, kennel-and-run combinations, and elevated kennels for damp ground. Over 80 kennels in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $120 compact plastic kennels to $500 large timber walk-in kennels. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.

What size kennel does my dog need?

The dog should be able to stand fully, turn around, and lie down stretched out — nothing more. Larger kennels actually retain heat worse in winter because the dog's body heat has more space to fill. Small kennels suit dogs up to 10kg (Chihuahua, Pomeranian); medium kennels suit 10–25kg (Beagle, Border Collie); large kennels suit 25–40kg (Labrador, German Shepherd); extra-large suits 40kg+ (Mastiff, Great Dane). Measure your dog's standing shoulder height and add 10cm — that's the minimum interior kennel height. Length should equal nose-to-tail measurement plus 20cm.

What types of kennels are available?

Type Best for Insulation Price guide
Timber kennel Natural look, year-round Moderate $150–$400
Plastic moulded kennel Low-maintenance, cleaning Low $120–$300
Insulated kennel Cold climates, winter High $250–$500
Elevated kennel Damp ground, ventilation Moderate $200–$400
Kennel and run combo Daytime contained yard Moderate $300–$700

Timber, plastic, or insulated — which kennel is best?

Each material handles weather differently. Timber kennels look natural, insulate moderately well, and last 8–12 years if re-stained every 2–3 years. The downside is timber can rot at ground contact points and harbours fleas in cracks if not cleaned regularly. Plastic kennels are easy to hose out (best for cleanliness), don't rot, and last 10–15 years, but offer poor insulation — they suit mild climates or covered positions. Insulated kennels use sandwiched foam in the walls and floor, holding 5–10°C above outside temperature in winter; they cost more but make a real difference for thin-coated breeds or dogs sleeping outside year-round. For most Australian backyards (mild winter, hot summer), a timber kennel in a shaded position is the practical choice.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Kennel size: Dog should stand, turn, and lie stretched — not bigger
  • Position: Shaded in summer, sheltered from prevailing wind
  • Raised floor: Stops cold and damp coming up from the ground
  • Sloped roof: Sheds rain; flat roofs pool water and leak over time
  • Removable floor: Easier for deep cleaning every 1–3 months
  • Insulation: Worth the cost in winter-cold regions or for thin-coated breeds

Where should I place the kennel in the yard?

Three things matter for kennel placement. First, shade for summer — morning sun is fine, but afternoon shade is essential; a sun-baked kennel reaches 50°C+ inside on a 35°C day and is unusable. Second, wind shelter — face the entrance away from the prevailing wind (south or south-east in most of Australia) so cold air doesn't blow straight in during winter. Third, drainage — a kennel on flat or low-lying ground sits in puddles after rain; raise it on bricks or a 2–3cm gravel base. Avoid placing the kennel directly against the house wall (creates a damp gap) or against a fence (limits airflow and access for cleaning).

How much do dog kennels cost in Australia?

Dog kennels at Simple Deals start from $120 for compact plastic kennels. Most quality timber and insulated kennels sit between $200 and $400, with larger kennel-and-run combinations running up to $700. All kennels dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.

What most pet stores won't admit

Almost every dog kennel sold online in Australia is imported from China or Vietnam — including ours. The real difference is not where the kennel is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions: kennel size labels are often optimistic. A kennel sold as "large" sometimes fits a medium dog only — the size names refer to the kennel category, not your specific dog. Always check the internal dimensions against your dog's measurements before buying. A 10cm difference in interior height can be the difference between a dog using the kennel and refusing to enter because they can't stand up properly inside.

Frequently asked questions

What if my kennel arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack kennels, but check timber panels for chips on receipt.

How long does assembly take?
Plastic kennels: 30–60 minutes for one person. Timber kennels: 60–120 minutes. Insulated and combo kennels: 2–3 hours, often a two-person job. Tools and instructions are included.

How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.

Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $300 kennel works out to four payments of $75 with Afterpay, four payments of $75 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $25 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.

What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled kennels in original packaging.

Complete the outdoor dog setup

A kennel handles outdoor shelter, and a few pieces round out the dog's yard. Most owners add three at the same time: a dog supplies starter for bowls and leads, a comfortable bed inside the kennel, and a yard enclosure for daytime contained space.
