What Most Sites Won't Tell You
Weight ratings assume an evenly distributed load. A 200kg-rated shelf holding one 150kg engine block in the centre is being asked to do something different from holding 200kg of spread-out boxes. Tall, narrow units should be anchored to the wall on uneven floors — most racking includes fixing points for exactly this reason. And MDF shelf boards will slowly sag under concentrated weight where steel shelves won't, so put the heavy gear on steel.

Standard garage racking handles tools, boxes and general storage comfortably. Choose long-span when you're storing genuinely heavy items — machinery, bulk stock, building materials — and need 400kg or more per bay.
Does industrial shelving need to be anchored to the wall?
Units on flat, level floors with balanced loads generally stand safely on their own. Anchor tall units on uneven slabs, or anywhere kids or vehicles are around. Most steel racking includes wall-fixing points.
