A futon bed works as a couch by day and a bed by night, which makes it one of the most practical pieces for a small home, a studio or a guest room. We stock over 20 futon beds — floor lounges, click-clack folding designs and three-seater sofa-bed futons — from around $52, with most full futon sofa beds between $120 and $330. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, so orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.
What is a futon bed?
A futon bed is a convertible piece that folds between a seat and a flat sleeping surface. Most modern futons use a click-clack mechanism: the backrest drops down in line with the seat to form a bed, and clicks back up to a couch. Smaller floor futons simply unfold flat. A futon is the simplest sofa-bed style, with fewer moving parts than a pull-out sofa bed, which is part of why it costs less and suits occasional use well.
What size futon bed do I need?
Futon beds mainly come in single and double widths. A single futon suits a child's room, a study or a tight guest space. A double futon sleeps one adult comfortably or two at a squeeze, and works as the main couch in a studio or small living room. Measure the wall for couch mode and the floor space for bed mode — a futon needs clear room in front to fold out flat. Check doorway widths too; most futons ship flat-packed through a standard 80cm doorway.
Is a futon comfortable enough to sleep on every night?
A futon is comfortable for occasional guest use, but whether it suits nightly sleeping comes down to mattress thickness — the detail most listings skip. Most futon mattresses are 8–12cm thick, which is fine for a guest a few nights at a time but thin for a primary bed used every night. If the futon will be someone's main bed, look for one with a 15cm or thicker mattress, or plan to add a memory foam topper. For a true couch-and-occasional-bed role, a standard futon mattress is enough.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Mattress thickness: 8–12cm for guests, 15cm-plus for nightly sleeping
- Measure both modes: Wall space as a couch, floor space as a bed
- Mechanism: Click-clack folds to a bed; floor futons simply unfold
- Width: Single for a study or child's room, double for a studio or living room
- Frame: Check the frame holds up to repeated folding
- Flat-pack delivery: Most futons ship boxed and fit through 80cm doorways
Futon or sofa bed — what's the difference?
Both convert from seat to bed, but they do it differently. A futon folds flat in one simple movement, with the same surface used for sitting and sleeping — fewer parts, lower cost, lighter. A pull-out sofa bed hides a separate sprung mattress inside the frame, which is more comfortable for regular sleeping but heavier and more expensive. Choose a futon for a small space, a tight budget or occasional guests; choose a sofa bed if someone will sleep on it often. We stock both — see our sofa beds range if you need the pull-out style.
How much does a futon bed cost in Australia?
Futon beds at Simple Deals start from around $52 for simple folding floor lounges. Most click-clack and three-seater futon sofa beds sit between $120 and $330, with larger fabric designs at the higher end. All futons dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every futon bed sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the futon is made is not the real difference between online furniture retailers. What matters is what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from an overseas container, which is why their "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there — the same imported futon, dispatched in 1–2 business days.
Frequently asked questions
What if my futon bed arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack futons, and we work to resolve any claim quickly.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $300 futon bed works out to four payments of $75 with Afterpay, four payments of $75 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $25 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled futons in original packaging.
Complete your living room
A futon covers seating and a spare bed in one, and a few pieces finish the room. Most buyers add three at the same time: a sofa bed if a second guest space is needed, a coffee table for the seating area, and cube storage for bedding and spare linen.
