A TV unit should be at least 30cm wider than your screen on each side — so a 65-inch TV (144cm wide) needs a 200cm+ unit, not the 150cm one most buyers reach for. The other thing nobody mentions: viewing height. The middle of the screen wants to sit at eye level when you're seated, which is 100-110cm off the floor for most adults. We hold over 490 TV units in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $40 small stands to $800 LED floating units.
What size TV unit do I need for my TV?
The TV unit should be at least 30-40cm wider than the TV screen so the screen doesn't visually overhang the furniture. Use the table below to match screen size to unit length.
| TV screen size | TV width (approx) | Minimum unit length | Ideal unit length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43 inch | 96cm | 120cm | 140-160cm |
| 50 inch | 111cm | 140cm | 160-180cm |
| 55 inch | 122cm | 150cm | 170-190cm |
| 65 inch | 144cm | 180cm | 200-220cm |
| 75 inch | 166cm | 200cm | 220-240cm |
| 85 inch | 189cm | 220cm | 240cm+ |
What height should a TV unit be?
The middle of the TV screen should sit at eye level when seated — typically 100-110cm off the floor for most adults on a 40-45cm sofa cushion. That means a 50-60cm tall TV unit for a 55-inch screen (which is roughly 70cm tall itself). Floating TV units mount higher and are easier to position correctly.
Sitting too high causes neck strain over long viewing sessions. The "fireplace mount" position — TV above the mantle — is 30-40cm too high for most rooms. Use a floating unit instead and put a low TV mount above it.
Where do all the cables actually go?
Cable management is the number one TV unit buyer regret. Cheap units have no cable routing — you end up with a power board sitting on the shelf next to the modem, and HDMI cables sagging across the room. Look for these three features before buying: rear cable cutouts (holes punched through the back panel), internal cord channels (vertical slots inside doors), and bottom-vented compartments (so set-top boxes don't overheat).
If you're wall-mounting the TV above a floating unit, you also need an in-wall cable conduit kit ($30-$60 from any hardware store). Without it, cables drape down the wall to the unit — defeating the floating-look design.
What styles of TV unit work in which rooms?
| Style | Best for | Storage | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor-standing | Most living rooms | Drawers + shelves | Dust collects underneath |
| Floating (wall-mounted) | Small rooms, modern style | Limited — usually 1-2 drawers | Wall must hold 30-40kg |
| Corner TV unit | Awkward room layouts | Triangular shelves | Limited width for TV cabling |
| LED-lit TV unit | Modern aesthetic | Standard drawers | LED strips fail after 3-5 years |
| Open-shelf media stand | Minimalist styling | No closed storage | Dust on every device |
| TV cabinet with doors | Hiding equipment | Hidden storage | Ventilation — leave doors open or check vents |
Quick buyer's checklist
- Unit length: 30cm+ wider than your TV screen width
- Top height: 50-60cm for a 55-inch screen on a 45cm sofa
- Cable management: rear cutouts AND internal cord channels
- Ventilation: set-top boxes need 5cm clearance above and behind
- Material: solid timber for warmth, MDF with veneer for budget, gloss black for modern
- Wall-mounting: check the rear backing — a 5mm thin back panel sags under TV weight
Frequently asked questions
How wide should a TV unit be for a 65-inch TV?
At least 180cm wide, ideally 200-220cm. A 65-inch TV is approximately 144cm wide, so the unit should extend 30-40cm beyond each side of the screen to look proportionate.
Can I mount a TV above a floating TV unit?
Yes, with an in-wall cable conduit kit to hide the cables. Without one, HDMI and power cables drape visibly down the wall. Conduit kits cost $30-$60 and fit in standard wall cavities.
How long does delivery take?
We dispatch within 1-2 business days from our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses. Capital city addresses arrive in 3-5 business days. Perth and Adelaide take 5-8 days. Regional and Tasmanian addresses take 5-12 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay or Zip?
Yes. We accept Afterpay, Zip, Klarna and PayPal Pay in 4. A $250 TV unit works out to four fortnightly payments of $62.50 with Afterpay. A $500 LED unit is $125 a fortnight.
What's your returns policy?
We offer 15-day returns on unassembled TV units in original packaging. Every unit comes with a 12-month manufacturer warranty. See our return policy for full details.
Complete your living room
A TV unit anchors the screen wall but doesn't furnish the room alone. Add a sofa sized to your screen viewing distance, a coffee table two-thirds the sofa length, and a bookcase or display shelf for the rest of the wall.
