Dining chairs get daily use and have to match a table in both height and style, so comfort and seat height matter more than the look alone. We stock over 800 dining chairs — timber, upholstered, PU leather and velvet designs, sold as singles, pairs and sets — with pairs from around $160 and most sets between $200 and $500. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, so orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.
What seat height should a dining chair be?
A dining chair seat should sit about 30cm below the table top, and this is the measurement that decides whether the chair is comfortable. Standard Australian dining tables are 74–76cm high, so the right chair seat height is roughly 45–46cm. Most dining chairs are made to this height and work fine. Some are 42–43cm, which leaves an awkward gap between your lap and the table. Before buying, check the seat height on the product page against your table — do not assume every dining chair is the same.
How many dining chairs do I need?
Match the number of chairs to your table length, allowing about 60cm of table edge per person so diners are not bumping elbows. As a rough guide, a 120cm table seats four, a 150–160cm table seats six, and a 180–200cm table seats six to eight. Many of our dining chairs are sold in pairs or sets of four, which makes it easy to buy the right number and keep them matching. Buying a set also avoids slight colour differences between separately ordered chairs.
What dining chair material is best?
The material decides both the look and how the chair handles daily use. Timber dining chairs are hard-wearing and easy to wipe down, which suits busy households and families. Upholstered fabric chairs are the most comfortable for long meals but show marks and need occasional cleaning. PU leather wipes clean easily and copes well with children. Velvet looks rich but is the hardest to keep clean. Whatever the seat cover, a solid timber or sturdy metal frame is what determines how long the chair lasts.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Seat height: Aim for 45–46cm to suit a standard 74–76cm table
- Quantity: Allow about 60cm of table edge per person
- Buy as a set: Sets keep chairs matching and the colour consistent
- Material: Timber and PU leather wipe clean; fabric is most comfortable
- Frame: A solid timber or sturdy metal frame lasts longest
- Flat-pack delivery: Chairs ship boxed and fit through 80cm doorways
Should dining chairs match the table?
They do not have to match the table exactly, and many people deliberately mix them. A common approach is to pick chairs in a tone that complements the table rather than copies it — timber chairs with a timber table in a similar shade, or upholstered chairs that pick up a colour elsewhere in the room. What matters more than an exact match is consistency among the chairs themselves: a set that matches each other looks deliberate, while a near-match between separately bought chairs can look like a mistake. Buying chairs as a set is the simplest way to get this right.
How much do dining chairs cost in Australia?
Dining chairs at Simple Deals are mostly sold in pairs and sets. Pairs start from around $160, and most sets of four sit between $200 and $500, with upholstered, PU leather and velvet designs at the higher end. All chairs dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every dining chair sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the chair is made is not the real difference between online furniture retailers. What matters is what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from an overseas container, which is why their "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there — the same imported chair, dispatched in 1–2 business days.
Frequently asked questions
What if my dining chairs arrive damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack chairs, and we work to resolve any claim quickly.
Are dining chairs sold individually or in sets?
Both. Many listings are pairs or sets of four, which keeps the chairs matching. The product page states how many chairs are included.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $320 set of dining chairs works out to four payments of $80 with Afterpay, four payments of $80 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $27 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled chairs in original packaging.
Complete your dining room
Dining chairs work best matched to the rest of the room. Most buyers add three at the same time: a dining table at the right height for the chairs, a buffet for crockery and linen storage, and a rug to define the dining area.
