Air Cooler

Air coolers (evaporative coolers) cool the surrounding air by evaporating water — a cheaper-to-run alternative to portable air conditioners that suits Australia's dry inland summers. Our range covers portable evaporative coolers (3–10L water tank), tower-style evaporative coolers, fan-and-mist hybrids, and outdoor patio mist coolers. Over 40 air coolers in stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, from $80 small desktop misters to $400 large industrial-strength evaporative coolers. Most orders dispatch within 1–2 business days.

Air cooler or portable air conditioner — which works for me?

The choice depends on humidity. Evaporative air coolers work best in dry air — they cool by evaporating water, which only works when the surrounding air can absorb more moisture. In dry inland climates (Adelaide, Canberra, Alice Springs, much of WA) an evaporative cooler drops room temperature 5–10°C and runs on a fraction of the electricity of an aircon. In humid coastal climates (Brisbane, Sydney summer, Darwin, Cairns) evaporative coolers add humidity to already-humid air, making the room feel hotter and muggier, not cooler. Portable air conditioners work in any humidity but use 5–10x more electricity and require a window exhaust hose. Rule of thumb: average summer humidity under 50% → evaporative cooler; over 50% → air conditioner. For most of inland Australia, an evaporative cooler is the cheaper and quieter choice.

What types of air coolers are available?

Type Best for Tank size Price guide
Compact portable cooler Bedrooms, single rooms 3–5L $80–$180
Mid-size evaporative cooler Living rooms, home offices 6–10L $150–$300
Tower evaporative cooler Open-plan spaces 8–12L $200–$400
Industrial evaporative cooler Garages, workshops 15–40L $300–$600
Outdoor patio mist cooler Decks, outdoor entertaining 5–10L $120–$300
Fan and mist hybrid Dual function 3–6L $80–$200

What tank size do I need?

Match tank capacity to runtime. A 3–5L tank gives 4–6 hours of cooling on high — needs refilling once per evening. A 6–10L tank gives 8–12 hours of cooling — a single fill covers a full day or overnight. A 12L+ tank gives 12–18 hours of continuous cooling — useful for outdoor entertaining or hot work areas. Larger tanks weigh more (10L of water = 10kg, plus the unit itself), so portability matters: most units include wheels but heavier coolers are still awkward to move when full. Ice can be added to the tank for extra cooling (5–10°C lower output for the first 1–2 hours), useful for parties on extreme heat days. The tank should be emptied and air-dried every 2–4 weeks to prevent stagnant water bacteria and mineral buildup.

Quick buyer's checklist

  • Climate suitability: Evaporative works best in humidity under 50%
  • Tank size: 6–10L for typical room use; 12L+ for outdoor or extended runs
  • CFM rating: 500–800 CFM cools small rooms; 1,000+ for larger spaces
  • Cooling pad type: Honeycomb cellulose pads outperform basic foam
  • Speed settings: 3–4 speeds give useful range; oscillation spreads cool air
  • Ice compartment: Boosts cooling on extreme heat days
  • Wheels: Essential for tanks 6L+ (heavy when full)

How much electricity does an air cooler use?

Evaporative coolers are one of the cheapest cooling methods. A typical 100–150W evaporative cooler runs on 1/10th to 1/15th the electricity of a portable air conditioner (1,500–2,500W). Running 8 hours per day at 130W costs around 30–40 cents per day at typical Australian electricity rates — less than $10 per month even with daily use. By comparison, a portable air conditioner at the same hours costs $3–6 per day, or $90–180 per month. This running-cost difference is the main appeal of evaporative cooling in dry-climate Australian homes — the cooling is moderate but the bill is invisible. Water use is also low: 4–6L per 8-hour session, similar to flushing a toilet 2–3 times.

What most appliance stores won't admit

Almost every air cooler sold online in Australia is made in China — including ours. The real difference is not where the cooler is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.

The other thing nobody mentions: cooling pad maintenance is the biggest factor in long-term air cooler performance. The honeycomb or cellulose cooling pad absorbs minerals from the water over time, gradually clogging and reducing the surface area available for evaporation. After 6–12 months in hard water areas, the pad's cooling efficiency drops 30–50% as mineral buildup sets in. Cleaning the pad with white vinegar quarterly (a 10-minute job) restores most of the performance. After 2–3 years, replacing the pad ($30–80 depending on size) brings the unit back to factory cooling. Cheap air coolers without replaceable pads become 2-year disposables; mid-range units with replaceable pads last 5–7 years with proper care.

Frequently asked questions

What if my air cooler arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with packaged coolers; check the water tank seal on receipt.

Will an air cooler work in humid weather?
Poorly. Evaporative cooling relies on dry air absorbing the water mist. In humidity above 60%, the cooler adds moisture without dropping temperature noticeably, making the room feel muggier. A portable air conditioner is the right choice for humid coastal climates.

How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.

Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $250 air cooler works out to four payments of $62.50 with Afterpay, four payments of $62.50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or a small monthly amount with Zip. Klarna is also available.

What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused air coolers in original packaging.

Complete the cooling setup

An air cooler handles dry-summer cooling, and a few pieces round out home climate control. Most households add three at the same time: an air conditioner for humid days, fans for general circulation, and a heater for winter.
