Baby safety rails stop young children rolling out of bed during the night, bridging the gap between a cot and a full bed. Our range covers fixed bed rails, fold-down rails, mesh rails for breathability, and longer rails for double and queen beds. We hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, dispatching within 1–2 business days. Bed rails from $40.
When does a child need a bed rail?
Most children move from a cot to a bed between 2 and 3 years old, and a bed rail is essential for the first 12–18 months after that move. The risk is rolling out of bed during sleep — young children sleep deeply and do not wake until they hit the floor. A 50–60cm drop from a single bed onto a hard floor is enough for a concussion. The rail does not need to stop a determined child from climbing out; it just needs to catch them rolling. Most kids outgrow the need for a rail between 4 and 5 years old.
What types of bed rails are available?
| Type | Best for | Length | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed mesh rail | Single beds | 1.2–1.5m | $40–$80 |
| Fold-down rail | Easy bed-making | 1.2–1.5m | $60–$120 |
| Extra-long rail | Double and queen beds | 1.5–2m | $80–$150 |
| Travel bed rail | Hotels and grandparents | 0.9–1.2m | $50–$100 |
| Pair of rails | Both sides of the bed | 1.2–1.5m each | $120–$220 |
How does a bed rail attach to the bed?
Most bed rails attach in one of two ways. Tuck-under rails have horizontal arms that slide between the mattress and the bed base, with the child's weight on the mattress holding them in place. These work on most beds but can shift if the bed has a slatted base with wide gaps. Strap-on rails have a buckle that wraps around the mattress, locking the rail firmly in place — these suit bunk beds, ensemble beds and slatted beds equally. Always check the rail height above the mattress; once installed it should sit 30–40cm above the mattress top to actually catch a rolling child.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Bed size: Rail length should cover 70% of the bed length
- Height above mattress: 30–40cm to catch a rolling child
- Attachment: Tuck-under for most beds, strap-on for slatted bases
- Mesh material: Breathable mesh stops faces being pressed against fabric
- Fold-down option: Easier for making the bed daily
- Age range: Most rails rated 18 months to 5 years
One rail or two — does the wall side need a rail?
If the bed is against a wall, the wall acts as the second rail — most parents only fit one. The risk on the wall side is a child rolling into the gap between the bed and the wall, which traps them. To prevent this, push the bed firmly against the wall (no gap at all), or fit a second rail. If the gap is wider than 6cm, fit a second rail. For beds in the middle of the room, two rails are essential.
How much do baby safety rails cost in Australia?
Baby safety rails at Simple Deals start from $40 for single fixed mesh rails. Most fold-down and extra-long rails sit between $60 and $150, with pairs running higher. All rails dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most sites won't admit
Almost every bed rail sold online in Australia is imported from China — including ours. The real difference is not where the rail is made, it's what happens after it lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: mattress thickness. Bed rails need a mattress at least 15cm thick to grip properly. Thinner mattresses (memory foam toppers, futon mattresses) do not provide enough weight to keep tuck-under rails stable, and the rail rocks loose during the night. If you have a thin mattress, choose a strap-on rail or thicken the mattress with a topper.
Frequently asked questions
What if my bed rail arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack bed rails.
Will it fit a bunk bed?
Top bunk safety is covered by built-in side rails on most bunk beds — adding a separate rail is rarely necessary. For the bottom bunk, a standard single-bed rail fits the same way as any other bed.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $100 bed rail works out to four payments of $25 with Afterpay, four payments of $25 with PayPal Pay in 4, or a small monthly amount with Zip. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unused rails in original packaging.
Complete the bedroom transition
A bed rail handles the safety, and a few pieces complete the move from cot to bed. Most parents add three at the same time: a kids' bed at the right height, a night light for confidence at night, and a sleeping bag for warmth without blankets.
