Baby Cot
A baby cot is where your child sleeps for the first 2–3 years, so it has to be safe, the right size for the room, and built to handle the wear of daily use. Our range covers standard fixed cots, convertible cots that turn into toddler beds, travel cots, and bedside co-sleeper cots. Baby cots from $200, with most quality cots between $300 and $600. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, dispatching within 1–2 business days.
What makes a baby cot safe?
Every baby cot sold in Australia must meet AS/NZS 2172, the mandatory safety standard. The key requirements: bar spacing between 50 and 95mm (wider gaps trap heads, narrower gaps trap limbs); a minimum depth of 600mm between the mattress base and the top of the side; no decorative cut-outs that can trap clothing or fingers; and a base that adjusts to at least two heights so the cot grows with the baby. Check the AS/NZS 2172 mark on the product page — cots without the certification cannot be legally sold in Australia. All cots in our range carry the standard.
What types of baby cots are available?
| Type | Best for | Years of use | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard cot | 0–3 years | 3 years | $200–$450 |
| Convertible 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 | 0–6 years+ | 5–7 years | $400–$800 |
| Travel / portacot | Travel, grandparents | 0–3 years | $120–$300 |
| Bedside co-sleeper | 0–12 months | 1 year | $200–$500 |
| Mini cot / small space | Apartments | 0–2 years | $200–$400 |
Standard cot or convertible cot — which is worth the extra money?
Convertible cots cost $150–300 more upfront but turn into toddler beds, day beds, and (some models) full single beds, extending use from 3 to 7+ years. The maths usually favours convertible: a $500 convertible covers what would otherwise be a $300 cot plus a $300 toddler bed. The trade-off is style — a convertible cot has fixed dimensions and a specific design language; you cannot pick a separate toddler bed in a different style. If you want a cot that becomes a toddler bed matching the rest of the room's furniture, a standard cot followed by a separate kids' bed gives more design flexibility. If you want to buy once, convertible.
Quick buyer's checklist
- AS/NZS 2172 mark: Mandatory Australian safety standard
- Mattress base adjustments: Three heights extend the cot's useful life
- Bar spacing: 50–95mm — the legal range
- Mattress size: Check cot internal dimensions match standard cot mattresses
- Drop-side: Banned in Australia — only fixed-side cots are legal
- Assembly: Most cots take 60–90 minutes for two people
What mattress should I buy for a baby cot?
The mattress is separate from the cot in most cases, and equally important. The mattress must fit the cot internal dimensions with no more than 25mm gap on any side — wider gaps trap arms and legs. Standard Australian cot mattresses are 1300mm x 690mm; check your cot's internal dimensions before buying. Firmness matters: cot mattresses should be firm enough that the baby's head does not sink in, which means a firm foam or innerspring designed for cots. Adult mattresses are too soft for safe infant sleep. Budget $100–250 for a good cot mattress.
How much do baby cots cost in Australia?
Baby cots at Simple Deals start from $200 for standard fixed cots. Most quality cots sit between $300 and $600, with convertible 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 cots running higher. All cots dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every baby cot sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the cot is made is not the real difference; what matters is the safety certification (AS/NZS 2172) and what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from overseas containers, which is why "fast delivery" turns into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there.
The other thing nobody mentions: the mattress is not usually included. A typical baby cot needs a $100–250 mattress on top of the cot price, plus 2–3 fitted sheets at $20–40 each, plus a mattress protector at $30–60. Budget around $200–400 extra beyond the cot itself for the full sleep setup.
Frequently asked questions
What if my cot arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack cots, but check timber pieces for chips on receipt.
Is the mattress included with the cot?
No — mattresses are sold separately on most cots. The mattress must fit the cot internal dimensions with less than 25mm gap on any side. Check the product page or contact us if unsure which mattress fits.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $400 cot works out to four payments of $100 with Afterpay, four payments of $100 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $33 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled cots in original packaging.
Complete the nursery
A cot anchors the nursery, and a few pieces round out the baby's sleep space. Most parents add three at the same time: a baby monitor for peace of mind, a night light for night feeds, and a sleeping bag for safer sleep.
