An armchair adds a single comfortable seat to a room — a reading spot, an extra seat beside the sofa, or a chair that fills a corner of a bedroom. We stock over 300 armchairs — accent chairs, tub chairs, wingbacks, rocking and recliner styles, in fabric, velvet and leather — from around $90, with most sitting between $100 and $300. Stock is held across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, so orders dispatch within 1-2 business days.
What types of armchairs are there?
Armchairs come in several styles, each suited to a different use. An accent chair is chosen mainly for looks, to add colour or shape to a room, and works as occasional seating. A tub chair has a rounded, enclosing back and is compact, which suits small rooms and reading corners. A wingback chair has tall side panels at head height, blocks draughts and gives strong back support. A recliner armchair tilts back with a footrest for full relaxation. A rocking armchair adds gentle motion, often chosen for nurseries. Pick the style for how the chair will be used, not just how it looks.
What size armchair do I need?
Most armchairs are 70–100cm wide. Measure the space the chair will sit in and leave at least 60cm of clear floor in front so you can get in and out comfortably. In a living room, an armchair should sit in proportion to the sofa — a large wingback can overwhelm a small room, while a compact tub chair can look lost in a big one. Check doorway widths too; many armchairs ship flat-packed or with detachable legs to pass through a standard 80cm doorway.
What seat depth should an armchair have?
Seat depth is the measurement most listings leave out, and it decides whether a chair is actually comfortable. A seat deeper than about 55cm makes most people feel they are falling backwards, or forces them to perch forward to keep their feet down. A seat shallower than about 48cm feels like sitting on the edge. The comfortable range for most adults is 50–54cm. Overall width and height tell you nothing about this — check the seat depth specifically on the product page before buying, especially for a chair meant for long reading or relaxing.
Quick buyer's checklist
- Seat depth: 50–54cm suits most adults — check this specifically
- Style for use: Wingback for support, recliner for relaxing, accent for looks
- Proportion: Match the chair size to the room and the sofa
- Clearance: Leave at least 60cm of clear floor in front
- Cover: Performance fabric or leather wears best in busy rooms
- Flat-pack delivery: Most armchairs ship boxed and fit through 80cm doorways
Where should an armchair go in a room?
An armchair is most useful where it does a job. Beside a sofa it adds a seat without the bulk of a second couch. By a window with a lamp it makes a reading corner. Angled towards the sofa it helps a living room feel like a conversation space rather than a row of seats facing the television. In a bedroom it gives a spot to sit and dress. A wingback or recliner suits a dedicated relaxing corner, while a compact accent or tub chair fits where space is tight.
How much does an armchair cost in Australia?
Armchairs at Simple Deals start from around $90 for sling and accent styles. Most fabric and velvet armchairs sit between $100 and $300, with wingback, recliner and leather designs at the higher end. All armchairs dispatch within 1–2 business days from our Australian warehouses.
What most furniture sites won't admit
Almost every armchair sold online in Australia is imported from China, Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia — including ours. Where the chair is made is not the real difference between online furniture retailers. What matters is what happens after the stock lands in Australia. Marketplaces dropship straight from an overseas container, which is why their "fast delivery" stretches into six weeks. We import in bulk, hold stock across our Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane warehouses, and ship from there — the same imported chair, dispatched in 1–2 business days.
Frequently asked questions
What if my armchair arrives damaged?
Contact us within 7 days with photos. We will arrange a replacement or refund under the 12-month warranty. Transit damage is uncommon with flat-pack chairs, and we work to resolve any claim quickly.
How long does delivery take?
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: 3–5 business days. Perth and Adelaide: 5–8 days. Regional and remote areas: 7–14 days.
Can I pay with Afterpay, Zip or PayPal?
Yes, all three. A $250 armchair works out to four payments of $62.50 with Afterpay, four payments of $62.50 with PayPal Pay in 4, or roughly $21 a month with Zip over 12 months. Klarna is also available.
What's the warranty?
12 months on manufacturing defects, plus 15-day returns on unassembled chairs in original packaging.
Complete your living room
An armchair adds a seat, and a few pieces finish the room. Most buyers add three at the same time: a sofa as the main seating, a coffee table within reach of the chair, and a side table for a lamp and a book beside the armchair.
