What size sofa bed do I need?
Sofa beds are sized by both modes. As a couch, measure the wall as you would for any sofa. As a bed, most open out to roughly a double, with some to queen — and the bed extends well into the room, so leave clear floor in front. A 2-seater sofa bed sleeps one adult comfortably; a 3-seater opens wider for two. Measure the floor space in bed mode, not just the wall, and check doorway widths — most of our sofa beds ship flat-packed through a standard 80cm doorway.
How long does a sofa bed mechanism last?
A sofa bed mechanism is rated by how many open-and-close cycles it can handle, and this is the spec that decides its lifespan. A budget mechanism is rated for roughly 1,000 to 2,000 cycles — around 3 to 5 years if guests stay weekly. A better mechanism is rated for 5,000 cycles or more. If the sofa bed will be opened often, the mechanism rating matters more than the fabric or the styling, because the mechanism is the part that wears out first. Is a sofa bed comfortable to sleep on?
A sofa bed is comfortable for guest use, and how comfortable depends on the design. Pull-out sofa beds with a separate folding mattress feel closest to a real bed. Fold-out and click-clack designs use the seat cushioning, which is firmer and can have a join across the middle. For occasional guests, either is fine. If someone will sleep on it regularly, choose a pull-out design or add a thin memory foam topper to even out the surface and lift the comfort.
